Fall in DC - Beautiful Colors and Great Events!

Fall is my favorite season, partly because I grew up in Los Angeles where very few trees change color and the seasons all gradually smush into each other without any obvious changes, and also because when I finally did visit the east coast in the fall, I fell in love with the smells, colors, and yes, even their crazy fall weather.

Rock Creek Park
Fall is when the kids head back to school, Congress returns to the Hill the first Monday in October, pumpkins and various Halloween decorations dominate historic porches throughout the district, and beautiful green, orange, purple, red, brilliant red leaves are everywhere!

Georgetown M Street
GEORGETOWN: The neighborhoods surrounding the various colleges in the district are buzzing, Georgetown being my personal favorite DC college neighborhood, and the energy is amazing. The crisp chill in the air makes you want to drink a lot of coffee and shop. Shop alot! You'll spend a lot of time in Georgetown checking out the various boutiques looking for that perfect scarf.
Georgetown Cupcakes

You'll head over to Georgetown Cupcake to wait in a long line for a delicious $2.75 snack (have one of their seasonal cupcakes), cross the street to Dean and DeLuca for an espresso and shop for snacks, and wander into Barnes and Noble to warm up and relax in a comfy oversized chair. Also, don't miss the Taste of Georgetown October 9th!

Kennedy Center's Hall of Nations
KENNEDY CENTER:  There are also so many wonderful performances in the fall including Bill Cosby, Chekhov International Theatre Festival, the musical HAIR, The Joffrey Ballet's Nutcracker... and that's JUST at the Kennedy Center of Performing Arts! There are dozens of more theatre venues and performance spaces in the district.

PARKS & GARDENS:  Fall in the Washington DC is so beautiful because of all the wonderful parks and walking paths. Here are a few parks that will give you the best colors: Rock Creek Park, the Chesepeake and Ohio Canal in Potomac, Mount Vernon (my personal favorite place outside the district), and the gardens at Dumbarton Oaks Estate.

VETERAN'S DAY:  DC’s world-famous monuments and memorials hold wreath-laying ceremonies to honor the men and women who’ve served in conflicts, attracting thousands of veterans and their families. There's no better place to honor these men and women than Washington, DC. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial, National World War II Memorial, Navy Memorial, Arlington National Cemetery all hold individual ceremonies November 11.
